Amitié et Compagnie
A simple lunch with Karen swelled to a meal with Charlene, Xinjie, Diana, Kang & Karen. Famished, our table was dotted with fried kang kong, prawn paste chicken wings, steamed fish & sweet and sour pork. I felt a tinge of the once-familiar warmth which eluded me thus far. Banter & mindless chatter aside, it was good emotional therapy.
Wednesday 1 March 2006
It started off with horrid sniffles in the morning. Diana was the next in line to be sneezing wildly in the staff room. Following that was Jiahui who almost resorted to stuffing tissues in those hard-to-reach places (Nostrils, nostrils! What were you thinking?!). The sniffing stooges went for lunch together with Charlene, LL, Xinjie & MF. Wolfing down lunch in fifteen minutes, we trotted back for a series of back-to-back courses till 6pm.
Out of nowhere, Karen craved char kuay teow & lugged me along to fulfil her desires (palatable ones, tsk!). This was my first lunch with a colleague since the beginning of the year. We're under the star of Scorpio, born in the year of the Goat (albeit 12 years apart), have similar taste in clothes, live close to each other, have a penchant for spicy food and can be scathing when provoked. Little wonder we got along well since Day One. The lady lives a life of luxury in a penthouse, thinks nothing of spending hundreds on SKII & La Mer products (a La Mer moisturizer costs $300+), yet squeals in delight at purchasing a $20+ skirt on sale, thinks that Louis Vuitton & Gucci's price tags are mistakenly printed with a tad too many zeroes and delights in hawker fare. This kooky combination of both extravagance & thrift is what makes Karen endearing and amiable.
